Short As Fictober #26: “Dark”

When the house goes dark, Penny lies awake making monsters out of shadows, wondering at the creaks and groans moving ever closer down the hallway’s floorboards. She pulls the comforter over her head, filling the close space with warm toothpaste breaths, and believes in the power of the blanket’s defensive capabilities as hard as she can. Are those low growls on the other side of the fabric, or the snores of her sister? She doesn’t need to know the answer badly enough to risk breaking the seal. Penny squeezes her eyes shut, and plugs her ears, takes solace in knowing she won’t have to stay like this until morning, only until sleep finds her.
